Fun at Smithills Open Farm Bolton – Our Review

We absolutely love getting out to farm parks with our sons. Our oldest is 2 and loves the animals. But as well as that, the open space and play areas are great for him.

We ventured to Smithills Open Farm in Bolton back in July last year. Here’s our review of the farm and a few questions answered:

The Quick Review

If you’d rather just have a quick rating, here it is.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

It’s a 5/5 for us!

What we loved:

  • Lots of animals
  • Under 2s are free – so our son was free at the time of our visit
  • Great little cafe
  • Indoor play options in the event of bad weather (though we had great weather!)
  • Huge outdoor play area
  • Plenty of parking

Smithills Open Farm Prices and Location

The prices are as follows:

  • Adults – £8
  • Children aged 2 or over – £7
  • Children under 2 – free

Here’s a map and address showing the location of the farm:

We found that our sat nav took us to the wrong place based on the actual postcode! And in the end we abandoned sat nav and looked for signs (the old fashioned way, eh?).

Smithills Open Farm Animals

Of all the farms we’ve been to in the North West, this is the one that had the widest variety of animals, including:

  • Cows
  • Pigs
  • Goats
  • Horses
  • Meerkats
  • Llamas
  • Ferrets
  • Sheep
  • Rabbits
  • Deer
  • Donkeys
  • Snakes

Smithills Farm Play Areas

This is the bit our son loves the most – the play areas. He’ll spend at least twice as long enjoying the play areas when we visit a farm as he will looking at the animals. And here, he had plenty of choice.

There’s a huge outdoor play area where the ground is covered in shredded tyres (easy on falling toddler knees!). There’s a slide, a tractor and ride ones.

There’s a sandpit, under cover pedal tractor rides, bouncy castles, inflatable assault course and real tractor and trailer rides too.

Our son throughly enjoyed the play areas.

Smithills Open Farm Cafe

We loved the cafe and both my husband and I had breakfast here! It was delicious and reasonable value too.

Our Overall Review

We visited on a summer weekend day but it was not too busy. We did arrive for opening time, which undoubtedly helps to ensure it’s not too packed.

We also had great weather which probably influences our review! But we had a great day. From star to finish, our son loved it and we’d love to take him back again one day.
