I know that the last thing kids need in the run up to Christmas is more toys. But I do love a good Advent Calendar. The rise in non-chocolate advent calendars has been significant over the past few years and not just for kids either. Beauty and boozy calendars are amongst the more popular offering for the grown ups, while there are increasing numbers of toy advent calendars for the children.
As an alternative to chocolate or sugary treats, these really are a fab option for excited kids waiting for Santa to arrive. Here’s my rundown of what look like the best toy advent calendars on the market in 2019.
Lego 75964 Harry Potter Advent Calendar 2019
Never mind the kids. This is one I want! I love Lego and I love Harry Potter. Sadly for me, my boys are only into the former of those 2 and are both just a tad too young to be infected with Pottermania just yet. But for the budding Wizards amongst your children this looks like a lovely Advent Calendar option.
It’s under £25 and comes with 24 toys including 7 mini figures, a Hogwarts Express train and buildable fixtures and furnishings.
Brio World Advent Calendar
I am so excited about this one as I wasn’t aware of there being one last year (maybe I just missed it though). The single most important toy to our four year old is his Brio wooden railway and our two year old gets so much joy out of it too. So I was really happy to see an advent calendar version for 2019.
It’s more expensive than some on the market at £20.99. But for fans of Brio it seems like a great treat option. Included in the 24 toys are Brio Christmas accessories, an engine, a horse and a Brio Santa.
At the time of writing, the description on this is a tad confusing. It says “recommended for” children aged 3+ but “suitable for” children from birth and “no small parts.” So my interpretation of this is that they believe the toys are best for children over 3 but don’t rule out younger children as there aren’t small parts. But if you’re unsure and would like clarification, it’s worth asking the seller directly or through Amazon.
V Tech Animals, Drivers and Friends
There are 3 options from Vtech in terms of toy advent calendars in 2019. They’re the Drivers one (Toot Toot), Friends and Animals. My little ones have both enjoyed Toot Toot at various stages. My youngest is 2 and a half now and is just about tiring of it in favour of Hot Wheels and things like that. Though V Tech specifies an age suitability of 3 and up, I can’t help but feel this is actually a better option for tots than the older children.
Playmobil Advent Calendars 2019 – Santa’s Workshop and 5 More!
Playmobil has no fewer than 6 offerings this year!! Santa’s Workshop (pictured above), Christmas on the Farm, Horse Farm Advent, Jewel Thief Police Operation, Royal Ice Skating Trip and Top Agent with LED Superweapon are all available on Amazon at the link below with prices ranging from £17.99 to £30.77 at the time of writing.
Most are aimed at children from 4 to 10, while the Christmas on the Farm on is from the Playmobil 123 range and is suitable from 18 months of age.
The thing I really like about the Santa’s Workshop set in particular is how the whole set links up. Instead of just 24 random toys, you get little pieces of a real set each day and at the end can help Santa load his sleigh to deliver the presents 🎁 . It creates a story throughout, which I know my four year old would really appreciate.
Hot Wheels Advent Calendar
Our boys are two and a half and four and a half and they are both absolutely crazy about Hot Wheels, so I’m sure our household will be home to at least one Hot Wheels Advent Calendar in 2019.
It includes 8 actual vehicles plus 16 other accessories and bits and pieces including stickers. That does represent a proper Hot Wheels vehicle every 3 days or so, which seems like pretty good value to me for a calendar coming in at under £20.
Paw Patrol Advent Calendar
My sons are massive fans of Paw Patrol and this will, I’m sure, be a real contender for them in terms of Advent Calendar choices this year. 24 days of Paw Patrol themed toys, including mini figures of their favourite characters looks like decent value with a £19.99 price tag.
Thomas and Friends Minis Advent Calendar 2019
In terms of value, I think this is one of the best with 24 engines (a different mini with a different design every single day for 24 days). It says it’s suitable for those aged from 3 to 99! I’ll be honest. My 2 and a half year old is a mega Minis fan and as long as he’s supervised, we let him play with them.
For some children, the fact this is a mini each day might make it a little less exciting than the surprise element of other toy advent calendars on the market in 2019. But for Thomas fans, I think it’ll be a hit.
We have a couple of Mini racing tracks in our house, so I imagine our little ones would absolutely love racing a new engine every morning in the run up to Christmas.
